WHAT CRITERIA COMBINES TO MEET
OUR DRYSPELL™ STANDARD?
The following elements are heavily lab and field tested:
Waterproofness
How well water from the outside is kept out.
Breathability
How well you are kept dry and comfortable inside the product, measured by testing the ability of moisture vapor to pass through the material.
Environmental Impact
All products that meet our DrySpell™ standard are fluorocarbon free / non-PFAS C0 DWR, which means the DWR is either plant-based or silicon based. Some DrySpell™ products also use recycled textiles.
Water Repellency
How well the exterior repels the absorption of water.
Durability
How well the material and product will perform over time, measured in the field with athletes and in the lab with before and after testing.
Product Construction
How well the method of sewing, taping, bonding of seams, zipper type, and design choices like storm flaps, pocket placement, hood coverage, and overall fit contribute to performance.
LAB TESTING BY-THE-NUMBERS
Every waterproof and breathable material we consider using undergoes a minimum of 20+ different lab tests.
Many tests are done repeatedly after wash cycles or simulated end case use. In some instances, a garment is washed 20x.

LAB TESTS
Bundesmann Test
Validates water repellency and waterproofness of specific material. It requires specific machinery set to specified standards.
Human Bundesmann Test
Validates water repellency and waterproofness of constructions in a ‘Rain Room’ with live subjects wearing finished garments in simulated rainfall.
Wet Flex Abrasion Test
Validates durability of material, water repellency, and waterproofness. It is a standardized test and a method of evaluating a fabric's resistance to wear and tear by repeatedly bending and flexing it while wet.
Martindale Test
Validates material durability, specifically to abrasion. Small panels of material are rubbed for thousands of cycles by different specified abrasives and then evaluated at intervals for damage.
Wash Test
Validates general durability of various criteria. The material is run through specified numbers of HLCs (Home Laundry Cycles) and measured for waterproofness, water repellency, tear strength, etc. This is a simulation of general wear and tear that a garment will experience.
FIELD TESTS
Prototype Material in Existing Design
Validates performance and efficacy of material for intended end use. Here, we use a new material that is under consideration and use it to make established
product designs and construction—and then we put it to use in the field during intended activity for the proposed product.
Athletes, Ambassador, & Employee Testing
We build close-to-production prototypes and use them outdoors, then evaluate both physically and conversationally via thoughtful user feedback.
With the recent environmentally positive regulatory shift to fluorocarbon-free DWR, we want to equip you with the knowledge to keep garments with the new non-PFAS C0 DWR in the best functioning order.
WASH + DRY TO ACTIVATE
Before you wear, wash and dry to activate the DWR coating on your waterproof garments.
WASH + DRY TO STAY WARM AND DRY
When you see that your garment is dirty or if it gathers water on the fabric, wash and dry regularly to re-energize the chemical bond of the DWR finish.
