Men's Ghost Whisperer™ Down Jacket 4.4 5 52 52
Very Oversized in the mid section I love this jacket. It is warm, light, and very functional. Unfortunately, the designers had people with large mid sections in mind when designing this product. I'm 511 and 180 lbs. Toned and Athletic. I purchased a size Large. The sleeves fit perfectly, the shoulders excellent but the belly section is very very large. The mid section would be the equivalent of an extra large. If it were designed with a trimmer mid section I would give it a perfect 10 or 5 depending on the scale. I can't imagine other people not having similar comments or problems. I spent a lot of money on this product and was looking forward to an excellent product in every respect. Unfortunately the M has sleeves that are too short and shoulders that are too tight. ( I have since tried on a friend's medium). I wished I had tried this on before I purchased it but because I am a perfect L with all of my MH products, I assumed this would fit similarly. Hard lesson to learn. I'm hoping my review will help others. May 15, 2014
Good midlayer, weird sizing I love the light weight, compactness, and that instant warmth from the down. I don't mind that it's probably a bit fragile, given the weight, I'll use it in town as a jacket, or as a midlayer in the mountain. However, I think the cut and sizing could be improved: I'm 5'10, 135lbs, skinny/athletic, and small is too small on the chest. So I got the medium, which is wide on the belly and waist. Bottom line: a more athletic cut would be better given this is somewhat meant as a technical piece. April 8, 2014
Disappointed I am thoroughly disappointed in this jacket. It does not keep you warm in temperatures below 40 deg. The zipper is another downside. Yes, it is lightweight but jams every time I unzip it. After reading other reviews I expect the zipper to fully fail. I have not gotten it wet yet so don't know if the water resistant claims will hold up. This jacket will not get much use because it is so fragile. It surely will not hold up in the mountains for backpacking or cross country skiing. For the high price, I expected a much more functional and reliable product. Mountain Hardware has let me down! March 20, 2014
poor design This jacket is remarkably lightweight, but unfortunately in an effort to make it this extremely lightweight, the zippers and adjustable drawcord at the hem are of a very poor design. The drawcord got detached on a second use! This product should be made more durable. Unfortunately it seems that Mountain Hardware lost focus on quality. Considering the price and the unacceptably low quality, this is definitely a jacket one should avoid. March 16, 2014
Wierd Cut, Crazy Light I'm 5'9" and 185 lbs. Apparently this is cut for a modern outdoor enthusiast with a large beer belly. The large is a bit too large for me - it is very baggy in the stomache. The medium is perfect in the stomache but too small in the chest. As for warmth, it does a descent job. It's very comfy if used as a insulating layer under a shell. By itself, it kept me mostly warm in 40 degree weather. The thing about this jacket that is spectacular is the warmth per weight. It is sooo light that any of the other shortcomings fade away when you pick it up and wonder at the engineering of this jacket. Despite the baffling cut of the product, I'd still buy again. March 6, 2014
Ok if you spill a beer on it. Wore a L blue whisperer to the club in NYC. Stuff it in the pocket and raged real hard. It repealed beer and vodka drinks very well. Kept me super warm and got many compliments. Stitching is very thin but will hold up. March 5, 2014
Falls short Love the idea of a warm light weight jacket. I bought this jacket purely for driving in the car. Its light weight and stylish. It works for business casual and I'm not freezing pumping gas or going to and from the Jeep in a long Canadian winter. Unfortunately the jacket is not durable enough to handle its own fill. The 10% feathers are causing 100% of the problem. Some feathers still have quill attached and are poking through the outer shell and leaving holes just large enough for the fill to come through. Its really to bad otherwise it is a great jacket March 2, 2014
Kind of deception I'm a regular NorthFace customer, though I saw the MHW Ghost Whisper and felt in love. I've tried at a near place called AnyMoutain and the fit was perfect however I wanted the Orange Zipper. I decide to pay a bit more and buy from you guys, after wait a while because there wasn't available in stock, I finally made my purchase, but when it arrive was a deception as it seems to be a bit bigger than the one I've tried before. I didn't find the time to go back to the store and check they still have the one I fell in love in the first place. But it seems the model came different then the one I've tried. Maybe you change supplier or something ... March 1, 2014
I would have loved this jacket...only if it was more durable This is no doubt a very nice, extremely light yet warm jacket. However it is also extremely delicate. I wouldn't recommend this jacket to anyone who does any casual outdoor activities. I went walking in the backwoods yesterday and the sleeve got caught on a branch and teared. I expected more from Mountain Hardware, as they usually deliver quality outdoor products. I don't expect this jacket to last me more than 2 seasons. February 22, 2014
Great Jacket This jacket is definitely perfect for light rain and makes a good middle layer to keep warm. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could just because it is a bit difficult to fit it all in the pocket when packing down. I wish the hooded version came in more colors also. February 11, 2014
Very good jacket; could be more awesome though. Love the jacket! Wish it were a tad warmer. I realize that would make it a little heavier but I'd take that trade off. Bigger issue is that the zipper broke on me. Might need to be a little heavier duty zipper. Water proof down is awesome. February 7, 2014
Ghost Whisperer Amazingly light down jacket! Definitely will use for UL backpacking at only 7.2oz. Only wish I'd gotten the hooded one for the extra warmth. February 6, 2014
Ghost Whisperer Down Jacket Received as a Christmas gift. Is a warm under jacket. May main complaint is with the zipper. I feel that it is too small. It is hard to get started and easy to zip up with the bottom not hooked. February 5, 2014
Great Light Weight Do It All Love it. Looks good, feels good. Numerous comments on the look and does it ever keep me warm...a down jacket I can wear in Misipy and not look like a clown. I can't wait to take it on my ski trip in March. Slightly tight below the armpits, but maybe I have gotten fat. I am 5'8" and weigh 175. February 3, 2014
Delicate Ghost Whisperer I really liked the jacket when I first got it. Super lightweight and warm. I ride my bike a lot and this kept the wind out well. With just a tee shirt underneath I was plenty warm in 30 degree temps. Unfortunately the fabric is not as strong as I thought it would be. I slipped on some freezing fog and torn right through the material. This jacket is less than 3 weeks old. Bummer for me. Quoted about $50 to send it back for repair. Bottom line is nice jacket, not strong enough for me. January 31, 2014
Great Jacket Awesome jacket. Great for cool mornings or layering. I wish the first generation that I bought had the Q-Shield like the new ones! January 16, 2014
LEGIT JACKET!!!! This jacket holds up well to everything, the down inside remaned lofty through out wet conditions. the jacket reminds me of puting on warm air. this jacket is sooo light and is fairly durable. i use it every where from my only insalation on a lightweight trip and i use it for layering on a snowy alpine trip i am 5,6 and a medium is fairly big but fits over my patagonia R1 perfectly. its my favorite puffy ever!!! January 12, 2014
Lightweight warmth While I can agree with others in that I'd prefer a taper towards the bottom of the jacket, I think I understand why it's designed as it is. Either way, I think the fit is great; tight enough to look good, but with enough space to layer underneath if need be. I wore this during the "polar vortex" that gave my area wind-chills up to -50 F in the past week, and wearing a t-shirt, sweater, and this jacket, I was fine. I've worn it when it was 10-30 degrees F out in nothing but a long-sleeved t-shirt, and was also still fine. It blocks more wind than I expected, and does a great job of keeping you warm while being light as a feather (or feathers, I guess). I don't know how well this would keep your warm if you're using it while camping (to sleep in), as I'm always moving when I'm outside wearing it, but for an insanely lightweight jacket, it does a heck of a job insulating. For reference on fit, I'm 5'11, 170 pounds (athletic frame), and the medium fit me great. January 10, 2014
Warm and Lite The warmth of this jacket compared to weight is remarkable! Can go out with a t-shirt and this jacket in 20 degree weather and still feel comfortable. Only issue is the style of fabric makes the color of the jacket ( I have Hyper Blue) have a sheen as if its looks wet and shiny. January 3, 2014
For Skiing and Cold Weather Boating I researched lightweight down jackets to use primarily as a mid-layer for about a month. I settled on this one. Three things stood out: First, it seemed to receive very good reviews, both on the MH site and on gear reviews. Second, the inclusion of hydrophobic 850-fill down. Finally, a hem draw cord that allows me to close the bottom of the jacket and seal out wind. I am 6' 1" and 175 lbs. Going by the size guide for my chest and waste, originally I ordered a medium but had to exchange for a large. The large has an excellent fit for my frame. The jacket is very warm. I have to open it when I step indoors as I start to sweat. Outside, because the jacket is so light, it really does feel - as people describe - like a warm envelope of air. January 1, 2014
It fits VERY WELL I tried many different brands on at my local retail store, the Ghost Whisper Down Jacket was the only one with ragland sleeve construction which means it is the only one with good range of motion in the shoulders, chest and back. The XXL also fits well with a good athletic cut fit, comfortable in the chest and tapered at the waist and good sleeve lenght (I wear 50 chest, 38 waist, sleeve 37). I also tried it on under my favorite waterproof shell and the fit was spot on, it will be a great layering and stand alone jacket. December 23, 2013
Perfect Jacket so light weight and so warm, folds up tiny for packing. Can't believe I lived without it for this long. December 19, 2013
Great Down Jacket I really like this jacket for the versatile use of it. I use it as a base when skiing, just walking around town and just for basically anything. This jacket seems like it could work all for seasons in the mountains of Colorado. The only issue that I have is that the feathers are coming out occasionally. Does anyone else have this problem? The fit is perfect with me being 5'9 and 185lbs you can't beat the medium. With that being said I love this jacket and want another! PS the hyper blue color is awesome! December 18, 2013
Tear issues? Super light, but so warm. It's a very comforting jacket. I'm bummed that it tore on the sleeve so quickly, and am treating it a bit more delicately now. I wonder if there are little patches for the "deep water" color. December 17, 2013
Cloud of Warmth The jacket is awesome, like a cloud of warmth around you, barely feels like it is there. Blocks the wind pretty well too, and heats up quickly. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is the fit is a little off. I am 6'1", 160 lbs, swimmers build. I ordered a medium and a small for comparison. I am usually a small, and this jacket fit well through the lower torso but was tight in the chest and a little tight in the armpits. The medium was baggy around the stomach and lower back but fit the chest and arms well. So I returned the small. Rather have a technical layer be more loose than tight. December 17, 2013
Hard to believe.... .....warmth from something so light and thin! Absolutely love this.... Only complaint is one us tall, long limbed folk often have: XL is too big and baggy in the body but, perfect sleeve length and, L is perfect fit in body but, just bordering on too short of sleeve length. December 12, 2013
Great for hiking The Ghost Whisperer is a phenomenally light down jacket that is great for hiking in the cold. Worn on top of three layers, it keeps me warm in single digit temperatures. Minimalist design is great although I would have liked an inside pocket for my cell phone. Acid green is a cool color that gets a lot of attention and a lot of positive comments. Have recently noticed some down "leakage", but this is minor. Some of the down is darker and visible through the thin material. Again, this is a minor problem. This is a distinctive jacket that I hope will serve me well on day hikes for years to come. December 5, 2013
light and right perfect fit ... lightweight and cozy! November 26, 2013
An Amazing Jacket If you live in a cold dry climate you have to own insulated jackets and this one is a winner. Amazingly light, compact, warm, high quality. I bought the silver color and get frequent compliments. I tried on the black and thought the finish seemed very shiny. I'm 6' and slim and bought the large. Fits great though there's a little room around the middle if you're carrying a few extra lbs. Would also make an excellent mid-layer under a waterproof shell. November 26, 2013
Ghost on Mountains and in Town I just took my Ghost to the Rockies and it worked great as my insulating piece under my shell. The only draw back was no pouch on the inside for my water. I simply tucked the Ghost into my harness and set my bottle inside the Ghost which worked okay. This piece is great as an everyday jacket as well. November 25, 2013
Great Jacket Great jacket, exactly what I was looking for in a down garment. November 14, 2013
Great Jacket! Great jacket. Tons of compliments on it. November 5, 2013
Not bad at all Wish it had additional pockets on the inside and a little thicker for warmth October 31, 2013
Super Light I was surprised at how light this jacket is. I haven't tested it in the cold yet. But this jacket is fun to wear, and looks great. October 3, 2013
Fantastic Jacket I had high hopes for this jacket after discussing other options with a friend (down shirt, heavier options). This jacket is the most useful garment I've owned in a long time. It provides a great layer of warmth for a cool fall day but easily accomodates layering for colder temps. The packability and weight make it truly revolutionary and it will be a key piece to my fastpacking venture in the spring. October 2, 2013
Great first impression I haven't been able to use it for its intended purpose yet seeing as it's August. I've seen the jacket in action during some Colorado mountain trekking, so I'm not worried about that. The fit for a large is perfect and it is unbelievably light weight. Looks great, too. August 26, 2013
Nice Job Great jacket! I worked at Philmont Scout Ranch using this jacket and it preformed great. It's weigh less and compactable. the only thing is that the fabric is so very thin that it could tare, but mine has not. The zipper is not the best it catches on the fabric and get stuck at the bottom a lot. But all and all its a fantastic jacket. August 20, 2013
hard to believe you're wearing anything This piece is ridiculously light, and the underlayer folds into its own pocket - use it as a pillow, stow it in your pack easily, or in a pinch - a pocket of your shell even. I prefer the hoodless for the freedom of movement, but it's a toss-up for comfort, if I were out on mountains more, or in colder weather with more regularity, the hood would be a great addition. If you are at all interested in a light baselayer, do yourself a favor and at least try one of these on. If you like the thermal properties of a down jacket there is no better on the market. At the time of writing this in May 2013 there are no other jackets on the market that compare to this baselayer. Nothing is as light, nothing is as compressable, nothing is as convenient. I didn't really see what differentiated Mountain Hardwear from the other high end outdoor brands... this jacket demonstrates why. It is unreal. May 10, 2013
Great, light jacket This jacket is sized a bit large. I am 6' and 153# and have long arms. To get a snug fit (to allow for use as an underlayer) I needed a size small. The arms were still fine. The material is shiny, good quality and appears to be as rip resistant as can be expected at this weight. It is remarkably warm and packable. I love this jacket and predict it will get a lot of use. In my opinion it is worth the extra money to get a very high quality product May 8, 2013
Stunning! This jacket is everything you want in a down jacket. I have had my fare share of down jackets that make me feel like the Michellen Man because of how bulky they are. This jacket has a low profile and feels like you have a cloud around you. I don't think I will be cold ever again. Size wise, I am 6'2" and felt this jacket fits great as a large. I only wish this jacket had a removable hood as I want a hood but not all of the time. May 3, 2013
Awesome mid layer and light jacket Was recommended the ghost whisperer by a friend and I will recommend it to all of mine. Extremely lightweight yet warm. I wore this around town and on light hikes in California when the temperature was in the 50's and was plenty warm. Sported it as a standalone jacket in the Uwharrie forest in NC when the temps were in the 40s, this plus a longsleeve base layer kept me warm. When the temp dropped into the teens and 20s, a light baselayer, this jacket and my Marmot ski jacket kept me very warm. Pricey but worth it for the weight to warmth. April 13, 2013
Amazing but.... This jacket is amazing! It's super light, comfortable and warm but, the only problem I have with it is the fabric seems too light I feel like I could rip it on anything I snag but I really haven't had that problem yet. April 1, 2013
i love this jacket i wore this snowboarding in vermont and with a outer shell kept warm and most important flexable. Rock climbing i found it great for belaying with lots of arm movement. backpacking this jacket is awsome because it compresses so small and takes the chill off at night and morning. March 30, 2013
Montana Guide So far love the jacket. Super light and warm in 30 degree weather. A little iffy on the zippers. They have malfunctioned on me three times now. March 25, 2013
Use it for everything, if only I could get out. My hoodless Ghost Whisperer has quickly become my go-to jacket. Warmth beyond its size and blocks wind better than advertised. Waist and cuffs stay where they are supposed to. I have snagged this jacket many times and it refuses to rip. My only complaints are the sticky zipper and the high tech shine of the fabric. Zipper has to be pulled apart like a "snap". Going to start with a little wax. The glossy fabric game is new to me, but plenty of compliments from attractive, down jacket lovers. March 18, 2013
Great Jacket This jacket is surprisingly warm for how light it feels. I am wearing it everywhere because it is so light and comfortable. I highly recommend one of these! March 16, 2013
Minimalist Heaven I wanted to write a review for others who are in the position I was in a couple weeks ago before finally purchasing this jacket. I'm about 6' 175lbs and bought the medium. It fits well... perfect in the chest/belly, but a little tight in the arms/shoulders. I tried on a Large and it was way too roomy in the chest/stomach area to function properly and keep me warm. Despite the fit not being PERFECT for me, this jacket is freaking incredible. I live in Portland, OR and cycle everywhere, so having a jacket this warm that takes up literally no space in my pannier is awesome. It is incredibly warm... I have to take it off as soon as I'm indoors or I will literally start sweating. The jacket is impressively water resistant as well. I have walked about 10-15 minutes in a light rain and it took on zero moisture. Overall, Mountain Hardwear has done something incredible with this jacket and I am extremely happy with my purchase. February 28, 2013
Insanely amazing Hard to believe how light and warm this jacket is. I was in 15 degree weather and took off my under layer fleece because I was too warm. A t-shirt and this jacket at 15 degrees--feels like you have nothing on, but you are totally comfortable. Great work, MH! February 26, 2013
First impression...WOW! Mountain Hardwear has blown away the competition when it comes to ultralight and warmth. This jacket is amazingly light and packs down to the size of a sandwich. I have yet to put this to the test of nature (hence the '4' stars) , but found it to be perfect around town at about 30 degrees. The 7d ripstop fabric is like wearing a cloud, you can easily forget you have it on. Couple this jacket with a rain shell and consider yourself ready for the elements. February 24, 2013
