RICHMOND, CA (September 4, 2017)Mountain Hardwear, under parent company Columbia Sportswear Company, announces the release of its new innovation in down jackets.

The traditional problems people face with down jackets—like stitches breaking, fabric snagging, down leaking through seams and styles not being functional through lack of stretch—is something Mountain Hardwear doesn’t accept. That’s why the brand, through their commitment to continuous progression, has set down a path to reinvent the down jacket.

The result—the Super/DS™ StretchDown—is a stronger, more abrasion-resistant upgrade to the award-winning StretchDown™ Collection. Created in partnership with Toray Industries, the Super/DS™ StretchDown Jacket’s stretch-baffle construction represents the future of down insulation technology. Created using a jacquard loom, the jacket’s face, back, and baffles are woven simultaneously as a single fabric, resulting in exceptional mobility, durability, and warmth.

“The baffles are made of two separate layers of fabric that are woven together at the baffle points, creating an incredibly strong fabric, eliminating the need for stitching or bonding altogether. It allows us to come out with a style that truly embodies durability and endurance. It’s setting new standards.” says Mountain Hardwear’s Steve Adams, Senior Product Line Manager for Outerwear.

Available for men and women, the Super/DS™ StretchDown features a full hood, reinforced zippers, and side pockets that work seamlessly with climbing harnesses. Positioned as the next phase in the evolution of the brand’s iconic StretchDown™ Collection, the designers at Mountain Hardwear intend to continue to push the category forward.

“This is the first peak into the future for technical, lightweight, durable down jackets,” says Steve Adams. “We plan to iterate on this design for Fall ‘19 and beyond, developing different versions that meet the needs our customers and athletes have on the mountain, whether they’re climbing, mountaineering, or even heli-skiing.”

Mountain Hardwear will release the Super/DS™ Stretchdown as an exclusive product available at REI. This strategic decision comes as the next in a line of successful launches between the two brands, following the Lamina™ Z and the original Stretchdown™ Jacket.
