Ethan with a backpack on from the MHW Archives
Ethan Pringle is regarded as one of the mostwell-rounded climbers of his time.

Raised in the Mission District of San Francisco, he started climbing after discovering his local Touchstone Climbing gym, Mission Cliffs, just four blocks away from his childhood home. For 8-year-old Ethan, it was paradise. He fell in love immediately, spending much of his time learning how to use every inch of the wall, dynamically jump to big holds, and climb with tension—the trifecta of gym climbing.

Now a climber of more than 20 years and Mountain Hardwear athlete of over 15, Ethan has successfully climbed some of the hardest routes in the world, while establishing a few of his own.
Hang Loose, Hang Ten
EVERYONE HAS A PARTY TRICK, BUT ETHAN’S JUST MIGHT BE THE COOLEST (AND MOST DANGEROUS). KNOWN FOR FLIPPING IT VERTICAL AND GOING HANDS-FREE, PERHAPS HIS INFAMOUS BAT-HANG IS JUST ETHAN’S WAY OF SEEING THE WORLD FROM ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE.

WHO DID YOU LOOK UP TO GROWING UP?

Like everyone else in my generation, I looked up to Chris Sharma the most. There were lots of other amazing sport climbers, regionally or globally recognized, that I thought were badass, but Chris was always the most impressive. He repeated and established many of the world’s hardest climbs for 20 years. He won so many comps he entered, always climbing with confidence and an effortlessness that captivated everybody. Plus, he was super nice and took interest in everybody that talked to him, no matter who they were. I remember meeting him at Mission Cliffs while he ate his burrito when I was 12 or 13 and was totally starstruck. I couldn’t believe he seemed as interested in getting to know me as much as I wanted to fan out on him. It was awesome to become friends with him and climb together over the years.

WHAT ARE THE SIMPLE JOYS CLIMBING BRINGS YOU?

Witnessing the first light on the mountain. Getting psyched with a cup of coffee. Fantasizing and obsessing about that move, that hold, that moment that it clicks. Looking at inspiring lines I've never seen before. Marveling at a beautiful sunset in the company of beautiful people. Going bouldering by myself. Feeling confident in vulnerable positions high off the ground. Feeling the texture of the rock on a windy, dry day. Supporting friends on their projects and being a hype-man. Becoming intimate with a place over a months-long climbing trip. The sheer joy of moving your body fluidly over vertical terrain. That moment you finally do that move, link that sequence, top out that climb you've been trying for hours, days, months or years, and break through that psychological ceiling of ‘can't.’

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE
PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOU?
I wish for the same thing everyone secretly wishes for: to be fully seen, accepted, and held by others. I try to be real with people, both in person and online, but it's difficult because society has created a false-standard of having to appear to be okay, even better than okay, most or all of the time. To be less than okay is to fail, and nobody wants to be seen as a failure, so we're all pretty busy trying to appear to be okay, when a lot of us, myself included, are less than okay kind of a lot of the time. Classically, I'm a lot better at offering people my full attention and a safe space to feel, than I am offering those things for myself, but I'm working giving myself space as well.
THE WORLD WOULD BE A
BETTER PLACE IF...
I think a lot of the world's problems are rooted in people suppressing their "negative" feelings like sadness, grief and fear, and being encouraged by society to emote anger and hate instead. But I think we'd all do well to soften a bit, generally slow down, and be more vulnerable and attentive with each other.
WHAT’RE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
My kindness, sensitivity, and capacity to understand and have compassion for others.
I think my life philosophy can be summed up by: However
you feel is okay. However you feel is the right way to feel.

WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO CLIMBING?
Climbing, to me, is like a formula. I apply it in the same way to every project or goal. I break the climb down to its smallest parts and analyze them, become intimate with the climb, and learn how to try hard on it.
AS SOMEONE WHO HAS SEEN THE CLIMBING
WORLD TRANSFORM, HOW DO YOU SEE IT TODAY?
Climbing is growing rapidly, and experiencing some growing pains. I think a lack of resources for useful information and mentorship is one of the biggest problems our community faces. There is a lot that newer climbers are just not being taught enough about etiquette, ethics, sustainability, safety, and not everyone has access or means to figure things out through sheer experience like I did.

At the same time, there is so much inspiring talent, creativity and inclusivity in our sport. The future looks bright in so many ways, and I'm excited to see it grow and be a part of it. Climbing changed the course of my life irrevocably and gave me so much of what I have today. I think more and more people are experiencing how powerful a force climbing can be, and that's a beautiful thing.

My goals are bigger, scarier and more exciting every year.
Sometimes I think the problem is that I'm less okay than I
used to be with falling short of them. I have to remind myself
what a privilege it is to still be able to pursue those dreams,
especially with the state of the world being what it is.
The pursuit is the best part anyway.
