Scrambler™ Roll Top 40 OutDry® Backpack is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from my favorite weekend pack after 2.5 years of use. I just bought my 2nd Scrambler RT40 pack. This one is a replacement to my first, which has been my favorite pack for the past few years.... Among other things, I lead off-road motorcycle trips through the Sierra Madre mountains, south of Monterrey, NL Mexico. My RT40 pack fits perfectly on the back of my bike for trips, and I've put it through the most rough and aggressive torture test of abuse for the past 2.5 years. River crossings, crashes, thousands and thousands of miles of dirt, dust, rain, more crashes... and the pack held up perfectly, retaining its waterproofness, even in the worst torrential rains ever -- even while driving 70mph... I also climb, kayak, cycle, etc, and use this pack as my daily go-to pack. It's just the right size, it compresses down exceptionally well for when I only need a few things, and SWEET LORD! IT'S TOTALLY WATERPROOF!! Sadly, on a recent Mexico trip, I failed to properly secure my old Scrambler RT40, it shifted on the motorcycle, and the hot exhaust melted a large, irreparable hole though it. *sad face* So I bought another identical pack. Well, it's almost identical. This time I went with a new color -- the replacement is the "Darklands" color scheme, and I'd like to comment that it is darker than in the photos. Online it appears khaki, but in real life it is more of a slate-olive-grey with black highlights. I personally think the actual appearance is nicer than in the photos. I usually use the pack without the removable top pack, and it seals and secures just fine with out it. I keep my travel toiletries and "bear necessity" first aid kit in it, and am more likely to toss it into the pack than buckle it to the top - the little top pack is water resistant, but not waterproof. My only real complaints/ recommendations about the pack, are I would really, really, REALLY love to see a simple key ring strap on the inside near the top of the pack, so the most essential things wouldn't get lost in the bottom of the one big internal area. Or the addition of one simple "wallet & keys sized" small inner pocket would be perfect!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super convenient As a guide, I use this pack ten hours a day for says on end in some of the world's wettest conditions. Being able to open the pack from the bottom and remove the top completely make this pack super-convenient, accessible, flexible, and--most importantly--fast-drying. I keep my first-aid box in the bottom and as such the pack stands up on its own, too. I tore the bottom of mine rubbing against rocks, but I patched it with bike tire patches and covered the bottom outside of the pack with cloth to protect it. That worked well. However, the metal back rod has worn through the bottom, and I don't think that's patchable. So maybe you should be careful not to cinch your pack down too tightly? True to name, it holds up better than other brands, but I am still going to need a new one every year. MH, I'm happy to see you're offering neutral color options, because everything bleeds color when it's wet for too long! (Still wish you made pale colors.) Anyways, this is my favorite pack ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid pack I bought this pack to use for Search and Rescue missions where I am able to have a lighter pack. I enjoy the daisy chains on the front for their versatility in attaching gear. I also appreciate that I can use the top and bottom to access the pack. I have yet to test whether the pack is truly waterproof, but the fabric does not concern me. I also enjoy that I can remove the brain if needed. The front pockets are very small, but for what I am using the pack for, the small size is more comfortable over a harness. My only real worry is the fabric of the side and front pockets and whether they will hold up. As for the rest of the pack, it seems very durable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs multiple sizes or length adjustment I bought a Scrambler 40 last year, but it was way, way too short for my back! Granted, I have a 20.5" torso, but I had my 5'4" girlfriend with a 16" torso try it on to find it either gapped at the shoulders or the hip belt rode too high. I then compared it's shoulder harness attachment-to-hip belt length with our packs. It was probably 1.5" shorter than her women's small pack and 5-5.5" shorter than my men's large. In the photo I've uploaded, the Scrambler is center, my girlfriend's pack is on the left, and my alpine pack on the right. Just look at the torso length differences! Aside from the sizing that appears to be for children, I really liked the pack. The roll bottom is absolutely genius! I'd love to see that feature translated over to the Ozonic series. I also really liked the hidden daisy chains on either side of the stash pocket. If this pack was made in maybe three sizes, and had a waterproof zipper for the lid, it would be excellent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for inter-city travel Overall great for carry-on plane, train. Roll top enables adjustment of bag size, although limits quick access to bag contents - my Scrambler -30- has a quick draw-string that is much more handy. But glad I got the 40. Multiple exterior compartments do allow quick access.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Scramblin' with my Scrambler Great bag. Roll top AND bottom.. makes it easy to access equipment on your approach and hike. Daisy chains on the front of the bag make it super easy to attach extras. OutDry materials.. unreal. Bag is water proof. The top lid is not, but in a real pinch you can put it in the actual bag itself. Awesome bag. Use it for my climbing gear. Would definitely recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but a few design oversights I originally bought this pack for weekend backcountry trips but have since upgraded to the Ozonic 50. Despite the product description, this pack is not suited for multi-day hikes. I found that anything more than 20 lbs overwhelms the suspension and cause the pack to sag. Coupled with a minimally padded hipbelt and lack of torso adjustment, the pack is simply not comfortable for multi-day hikes. On the bright side, the Outdry material is impervious to water, and coupled with a roll-top design the main compartment is completely watertight. I recently hiked the Grand Canyon and easily rinsed the dust off in the streams and waterfalls without anything getting wet. The bottom of the pack is also a roll-top closure, so you don't have to empty the entire pack to retrieve something from the bottom. The stretch stash pocket is amazing- I never realized how handy it was to have one, but the mesh is not abrasion resistant and after a couple trips in the mountains I had several holes in the stash/side pockets that needed mending. There's also no security clip in the lid for your keys, so you'll have to find a safe place for them elsewhere. The biggest complaint I have are the terrible hipbelt pockets. They are tapered and extremely shallow- I couldn't even fit a Clif bar inside. Forget about a GPS unit, camera, or smartphone. How these ever passed testing is beyond me. I'd only recommend this pack if you don't care about the hipbelt pockets and your base weight is less than 20 lbs e.g. hut-to-hut, frontcountry, overnighters. For weekenders and multiday trips, go with the Ozonic series. (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So boss This thing is legit I've I've put it through the wringer this past season. Only two gripes are the hip belt has two small pockets... One fits a key and the other a candy bar. Should be larger to hold at LEAST an iPhone. Second gripe is the mesh is amazing but all my mesh pockets have torn from snags or putting things into them... Nothing sharp just zippers and such I guess. PS: Bottom unrolls too which is a nice thing if you just want to drop things out the bottom.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Flawed awesome bag. Everything Mountain Hardwear says about this pack is true. It's light weight, waterproof, and comfortable. Being able to access the pack from the bottom is pretty cool. For me having a external water reservoir is a must. I feel there is one tragic mistake on this pack. The hip belt pockets are useless. I was able to squeeze a snack bar in but it was physically impossible to get it out with the pack on. I own 7 packs of all sizes they all had relatively functional hip belt pockets. I don't see how when prototyping this bag that this was thought to be the way to go. If this were fixed the pack would be perfect.
