Men's StretchDown™ Hooded Jacket is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A few pleasant surprise, but didn't work for me. First of all, I got this as a gift from my wife when I complained that my current loose fitting size small down jacket is getting tight on my size medium frame. At first, I was super surprised of how it feels different from other down jackets. The down doesn't completely collapse when pressure is placed on it, it feels almost like a balloon, it bounces back the moment you remove pressure. I thought it was awesome because it would help maintain loft and keep you warm. You can still compress it by maintaining pressure on it until all the air is out. The down side is it does take longer to loft back up when you just pull it out of a compressed state. Winter came fast and furious this year in Calgary. A moist day around freezing and I notice this jacket wasn't warm enough. I compared it to my old down jacket which weight less but feels much warmer and notice the following. 1. The bonding used on this jacket might prevent feather from come out because there is almost no sewing, but it also 10 times wider, so I feel like the cold spot is larger than sewn-through baffle. This might be the reason why it doesn't feel as warm. I hope this new bonding method prevent down from migrating because my old jacket has lost a lot of down near the shoulder and chest area. 2. This jacket weighs 530g, compared o my old jacket which weighs 470g. I think a lot of that weight is in the stretch knit fabric. It feels tougher, but also weigh more. 3. Slim fitting for a down jacket. This down jacket fits like a slim fitting jacket. Not like most down puffy. The result is that the size medium fit like my old jacket in size small. I am not saying that you should size up, I am just saying that it fit like a slim/active fit jacket. So only size up if you like it loose fitting. I find it tight around the should and armpit area. 4. The last item I'll mention is how the size zipper is further out and back than most jacket which is forward and closer to the center. You do get a little bigger drop pocket as a result. 5. The jacket stretch in a whole bunch of area, but not much around the armpit, which is where it's tight for me. If I got a little more room there, I would definitely recommend this jacket. For the record though, my chest is 40.5-41 inch, which is at the upper limit of a medium.
