Rated 4 out of 5 by from Long sleves I am 5'7 200lbs and i order a Large, i wear medium in some styles but the sleeves are too long, i used with a ghost whisperer jacket under. This is the lightest, most packable, and most intelligently designed rain layer. The stretch provides a bit extra range of motion, great for cattle work and hiking on weekends. i love MH products always great materials and quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breathable to the Max! Being a part of the US Army Infantry functional rain gear is paramount. You can't fully predict the weather and you have to be in it anyways, so gear choice is very important. The Quasar Lite jacket is light and even has ample room for a helmet to be worn yet fits true to fit. The real test was whether I would be kept dry in warm weather and still not sweat; becoming wet anyways and defeating the purpose of even having rain gear. This jacket passed the test exceptionally its elite Dry Q tech really is breathable even while hiking which is no small feat. Additionally the chest vents which double as usable pockets make this jacket well worth its price tag.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hood and Seepage issues After several months with this jacket, I've thrown in the towel. The hood is only useful if you're wearing a helmet. Even though you can adjust down, it doesn't go far enough and the bottom section below and beside chin does not suck in at all, so it hangs out a bit like a big guppy, grabbing rain water. That water gets on the handy little liner for your chin and wicks right down into the jacket and onto you. If the rain only comes at and angle from behind you, then you're fine I guess. The jacket also wets out terribly. Even from new it didn't repel well. Only ever washed with tech wash and then tried retreating with revivex DWR (works great on other jackets) - no luck here. Oregon coast mountain hiking in the rain and this thing wetted out awful so it couldn't breathe, leading to more moisture inside from body heat. The DryQ-Elite is probably fine, but the rest of the jacket completely nullifies it. Jacket looks like new and it's headed to the donation bin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shell-excellent Not a ton to say here. Reason being b/c the Quasar Lite does exactly what it's designed to do; which is act as a wind stopping, rain repelling, heat retaining hard shell. I wear this as my outer layer depending on the weather. If it's raining/snowing, it's on and it's doing work. I've worn this in some soupy weather, and it's stood up to it with no problem. On top of that, it's ultra compressible/packable, so it goes with me on all of my trips, which are frequent. If it's really cold and windy/rainy outside, I suggest pairing this as your outer layer with a Fairing jacket and Ghost Whisperer. That's about as good as it's gonna get if you're looking for a lightweight, versatile outerwear system that's not gonna cost $$$$. Also, the jacket has a real clean, simple look, which just adds to the number of situations you can wear it in. My only complaint is that it doesn't have pit-zips. I'm guessing MH believes enough in the garments breathability that they chose to leave them off. We'll see when it's raining in the summer. To combat that though, they've placed a reverse zipper on the jacket. So, you can zip it vertically from the bottom zipper and dump some heat if necessary. It's a nice touch and not something you find all of the time. Another winner from MH. If you're in the market for true, lightweight, packable shell, get this over a competitor's.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unique Fabric, Durable, and Great Fit I was looking for a light weight rain jacket for backpacking and stumbled upon the Quasar Lite. After looking at the various jackets Mountain Hardwear offered (Plasmic Ion, Alpine Plasmic Ion, and Torzonic), the Quasar Lite felt and fitted me the best. The material used to make this jacket feels really nice compared to other lighter jackets that almost have a trash bag type of feel. The Quasar Lite has held up well to the relatively light rain in Northern California. I can't comment too much on the breathability of the jacket because I sweat easily and no jacket will ever be able to prevent me from sweating while hiking with the jacket on. Go try it on for yourself!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Waterproof-ish I saw the two reviews that felt this shell is not waterproof. I'm not convinced that it is water permeable, just that it absorbs water. One thing is for sure: it does NOT bead water as depicted here on the MH website. It absorbs into the exterior fabric such that the jacket becomes wet, heavy, cold and clammy. I don't believe water is actually coming through the fabric, but it sure feels like it when the exterior is as wet as a bath towel and the shell is so thin. The interior fabric also absorbs water, so be careful putting it on in the rain. I replaced a similar shell from another manufacturer that used Gore 3-layer Pro fabric. This MH shell uses a 2.5-layer fabric. I don't know the technical differences, but my former shell never stopped beading water. This shell never started. I included a photo. It is hard to tell, but that jacket is absolutely wringing wet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lightweight Packable Wanted a lightweight shell to wear as winter comes to end end and spring begins...this jacket is very lightweight and perfect for layering. It breathes very well and keeps me not too warm not too cold. I wear a small in my other MHW+CH trench. This jacket is VERY snug so I had to size up to a medium. I like my jackets somewhat fitted and medium does the trick.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It is NOT waterproof, unfortunately Unfortunately I must agree with CamelsHump. I've owned this jacket for couple of months but yesterday I had the opportunity to prove its waterproofness. It was snowing and raining in the evening and I have been riding outside for approx. two hours on my fat bike (even without a backpack) and...I totally soaked. Arms, body, everything wet but not from sweating. How is it the waterproofness of Quasar Jacket Mountain Hardwear?? Please provide us the explenation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dry Q Elite is not waterproof I've owned this jacket through November and December during relatively mild conditions in New England. I've used it to bike or run to and form work as well as for skiing and hiking. For dry conditions this jacket certainly excels. The apline cut provides perfect length in the arms for cycling, while not getting in the way for hiking or jogging. My XL ski helmet doesn't fit under the helmet compatible hood. I normally have a light strapped to my bike helmet, which obstructs the hood. That feature would have been a nice bonus, but it is also one that I wasn't too focused on. Based on my experience the most striking characteristic of this jacket is that it is simply not waterproof. "Water-resistant" would be more accurate. This is truly surprising after reading the other reviews. Anything more than a light trickle or mist will cause the jacket to start absorbing water. If I lay the jacket flat and pour a tablespoon of water onto the sleeve I start to see dark patches within a few seconds. I probably should have been more skeptical of the claims that this jacket both breaths well and is waterproof, but the excellent reviews here coupled with what purports to be "Elite" waterproofing suppressed any reservations I may have had. If it weren't for the reviews and the "Elite" moniker I probably would have been very happy with this jacket.
