Summary

A versatile jacket that is super light but still has uncommon warmth, with a little added stretch to improve technical mobility in the mountains. It’s made with a revolutionary welded-channel construction that traps warmth and enhances durability. And the 15D face fabric feels almost featherweight but is unexpectedly robust, so it has excellent resistance to wind, water, and abrasion from ice, rock, and the occasional unfortunate tree branch.

Men's StretchDown™ RS Hooded Jacket is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceptionally warm jacket with one flaw - the hood. I recently had the opportunity to test out this jacket in Grand Lake, Colorado while snowshoeing, snowmobiling (layer), and for around town wear (avg temp 20-30s not including wind). I plan to keep this jacket unless I find one with all the features Im looking for: 1) Warmth: The jacket was exceptionally warm while active and idle. Of course this will be an individual thing as some people tend run either warm and cold. My layers consisted of a Chili brand thermal top, mid layer long sleeve pullover, and the StretchDown RS Jacket. To control my temperature I vented either the pocket zippers, the main zipper and my long sleeve mid layer shirt or combination of all. 2) Durability: I did brush up against branches and had no issues but I did my best to avoid them. I would not recommend this jacket for snow skiing as I personally want to ski uninhibited without gear worry in case of falls, tree skiing, etc. 3) Features: Had everything I wanted, waist cinch, outside pockets, inside pockets (could be snugger to hold gear in), chest pocket, and a hood. The hood was the downfall, and I confirmed today that apparently Mountain Hardware does not have hoods with a cinch like other brands. If anyone has been to Emerald Lake in RMNP, its windy and your hood will not stay on your head! Not sure why this feature is left out on their jackets but it would seem logical to have it especially given the price of higher end down jackets. 4) Stretchable and RS (Ripstop) feature: There is no stretch on this jacket but its not a deal killer for me. I bought the RS version of the this jacket as I wanted a more durable jacket.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too Narrow in Shoulders This jacket has some nice basic features but the narrow cut in the shoulders makes it a poor fit. I am 6'4" and 185 lbs. 16/35 shirt and 42L jacket. I traditionally wear a Large in Mountain Hardwear and ordered one of these. Fit is ok in arm length and lower torso but way too tight in shoulders. Going to XL makes lower torso far too big. The stretch is very limited. It does a little, but not enough to overcome the narrow cut. Wide shoulder guys should probably pass on this. For those with a narrower frame, it might work out nice. It's a thin jacket and I think the Ghost Whisperer might be a better choice for similar thickness in a jacket.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nothing Stretch About "Stretch down" This is some sort of ugly marketing trick ... there is absolutely no stretch about this stretch down except the name. What a waste of time and energy ... what a disappointment. I returned it immediately and MH made me pay $18.00 for the return postage. Additionally, the fit was way small.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great medium weight down Bought the Stretchdown RS as a replacement for my winter emergency jacket. I haven't yet had the chance to test it at -20, but it seems to be a very warm, extremely compressible, and a really well constructed jacket. Love the welded seems as I haven't seen one feather sneak out yet. I'm looking forward to it being my go to jacket when I need warming up at a belay or when changing over from walk to ski! My only complaint is that the fit could be just a little more snug around the torso, but then I'd loose being able to layer so much under it, and it might not stretch as much as it does. I might change my mind about that when it is freezing cold out, and I need to keep my skins warm as those pockets look just about perfect for the purpose...never thought I do that with a down jacket though but it should be fine with the Q-Down shield. Seems to be the best buy for features at its price point.
