South Col™ 70 OutDry Backpack 4.8 5 4 4
Versatile and lightweight, 2 packs in 1 This is by far the best backpack I ever owned. Works both for heavy loads - although not too comfortable when I had a 26 kg, but manageable - as well as a summit day pack, since it can be reduced to a pretty small size. Material is super durable and truly water proof. Overall, a super versatile backpack, that can be used in many different occasions, but to an alpine climber in the big mountains, it serves a double purpose (carrying loads + summit push) with the benefit of being super lightweight, thanks to no unnecessary thrills, and just the right amount of pockets and straps. Just right Just arrived home after a weekend backpacking trip, 30 miles or so, with this pack. It is the first I have purchased of its kind, and I can say that it was great. At first I was a bit confused as to how to pack and cinch it down properly, but I soon found every chord, pull, buckle and fastener in natural positions that my hands easily found. The weight distribution was great and honestly felt "light" on my back and hips. You can really cinch the pack tight against your body so you don't get that swaying pack motion on the trail. The 70 seemed like it was going to be gigantic at first (and it is!), but it is collapsable enough that you feel like you are wearing something much smaller. Thank you designers! May 25, 2014
South Col 70 OutDry I have had used this pack for a total of about eight days in winter conditions and I love it!! it is light enough for its size and very user friendly. the crampon pocket is outstanding. There is no reason to use a crampon bag with this pack. snowshoes and ski poles as well as ice axes are easily attached and removed. This is the most comfortable pack of this type that i have ever worn. I believe this is the best pack in its category available. March 2, 2014
first impressions I ordered this when it first became available so I have had a few weeks to try it out. Mother nature sent plenty of rain and wet snow this way, so I am pleased to say the Outdry tech works as advertised. Also working as advertised is the large front pocket that keeps its volume even when the main compartment is stuffed. That and the crampon pocket will be much more useful to me than the daisy chain that occupied this space on the previous version. Also gone is the small inner lid and hydration sleeve, neither of which I will miss. The ice axe attachment is a neat idea, but even with the loop fully loosened, getting the loop around the axe head and the pick in the sleeve was a very tight squeeze. With some tools it might be necessary to ignore sleeve and use the loop in the traditional way. Or maybe I was just doing it wrong. It would be nice if MH included diagrams to illustrate the intended use of various features. The zippers on the pack were a little sticky but I expect they will loosen up with use. The load lifters now have handy thumb loops to make them easier to tighten with gloves. One change that is not for the better is that it is offered in only two sizes, S/M and M/L, not S, M, and L like with the previous version. Side by side with my old size M South Col 70, the pack size of the S/M appears identical but with a significantly smaller hip belt. My normal pant size is 32, and it fits, but without any length to spare, especially if I am dressed for the cold. Nevertheless it still supports 40-50 lb. loads ok and with decent comfort for a pack where the design priority is keeping things light. Overall my first impression is that this is an excellent pack, but I am deducting a star from the rating due to the more limited size options. Some people sized to a medium in the previous version might be out of luck with this one. February 15, 2014
