Rated 4 out of 5 by 2 Complaints Great pack! this is MH's best 70l yet. That being said MH can improve upon: 1) for such a high quality everything else, why downgrade to a less durable fabric on the hip and shoulder straps that stretches away from the foam? the material used on the Molima 70 several years back should be the bare minimum for durability. To downgrade it feels like planned obsolescence. 2) This did not appear to be a return so I have to imagine that the smell came from the production factory. It smells like it lived in a smokers den. As I'm writing this review it is permiating the room from a few feet away. For anyone sensitive to the toxins in cigarette smoke this is no Bueno. Hopefully the exchange will be fragrant free. This is not meant to bash a truely great pack, I do recommend it and will be keeping it, but MH please take note of those two somewhat minor complaints. April 4, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Winner, winner chicken dinner! With over ten years' experience in the Army and twice as many in the mountains, I can without a doubt say this is the finest pack I've ever used/seen - period! It's extremely rugged and has almost every conceivable option out there. Most importantly, the OutDry fabric performs as described. MH continues to set the industry standard! Can't wait to use this on my trip to Annapurna North Base Camp in November. March 23, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by This rulez Easily the best pack I own. I spent a week in Denali park living out of this in the backcountry and it was excellent. Totally waterproof, rugged, with all the right features. Only downside is because it is waterproof it doesnt fit a bladder, but my 4L msr bladder fits in the front separated zippered pocket. Easy to load, use, and comfortable. February 15, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great multi-day backcountry pack I purchased the South Col 70 to replace my old disintegrating pack, which killed my shoulders during a wilderness cross cut saw training. My first backcountry trip with the South Col was amazing and there is plenty of adjustability. Pack felt much better all around and there seems to be more than enough room for multi-day trips. I was skeptical about the claim that the South Col doesn't need a rain cover, but after several summer/winter trips I haven't had a problem. First Mountain Hardwear pack and I am now a convert. Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Pack When looking at this pack it was rather difficult to find any good reviews so I was a bit skeptical before purchasing it. My biggest recommendation is this pack is pretty light and when compared to the 50L pack its virtually the same weight. The cool thing about this pack is you have 70L but can definitely pack it down smaller if you need. You can pull the compression straps tight as well as remove the top pocket shrinking the pack. While being the same weight as the 50L I don't see why you would steer towards the smaller 50L pack. This is honestly a great all around pack. Its water resistance is great in the rain/snow and its really nice to not have to worry about putting your stuff in bags all the time. Id say the only cons of this pack are not having smaller external pockets, no waterbottle holder or dedicated Camelback pocket (you can make due with using the back pocket underneath the crampon slot). Rated 4 out of 5 by Good Simple Pack Have had it not quite a year now, but it has served very well. My son took it to Philmont where he experienced heavy rain. No complaints about keeping things dry. Haven't had it long enough to say how it will stand up over time. It is lightweight, yet packs enough to keep you going for a long week. November 10, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sturdy backpack Very versatile and reliable. Great for any long hike or challenging ascent. August 15, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great winter pack Ive used this pack a couple of times. Overall very happy with it. This is definitely a bag for lighter loads as the suspension system, especially the belt seems to be build more for securing the pack to the wearer's body vice a primary load-bearing function. My opinion is that the bag is a good winter bag where you need volume but won't be carrying a great deal of weight. I am 5'10, 190# with an athletic build and ordered a M/L size. Unless there is something Im missing, the pack is not adjustable size-wise and I find that it rides a little low on my backside (not in the small of my back/upper buttox as I prefer). In other words it feels a bit big for my size. May 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by A Monster Pack I have the previous version of this pack and I am writing after what I consider ample time to put this gear to the test. I am an avid back-packer and outdoorsman and have strained every fiber of this bag only to have it Overcome my abuse and wait patiently for the next trip. Unlike the other reviews I have read, I really load this pack down. I have three kids (who all backpack with me) but I tend to carry more of the weight! Normally my SouthCol weighs in at 65 pounds and I have put literally hundreds of miles and weeks on this pack in the outdoors... from Yosemite, CA to Mount Rogers, Virginia. I have attached several external pouches to the pack for medical(Tourniquet to band-aids), Signal(pen flares/mirror/fire), Navigation(GPS/Maps/Compass) and protection(Glock19 & Benchmade). This pack handles it all, trust me. I have snowshoed for two weeks and had dry gear in Nevada, walked thru the thunderstorms in North Carolina, and trekked thru Yemen... tested and proved. Enjoy this pack people....for a decade or two...it's that tough. Caveat, I take extremely good care of my gear pre-trip, during the trip, and post-trip which makes it last. March 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic winter bag!!! I was quite excited to try this bag out once I ordered it and it performed as I expected, superbly! As with all my experience with Mountain Hardwear gear I was not surprised. I recently used it on a quick winter excursion with my six year old daughter (had to carry her gear as well as mine). I was surprised with the comfort of the bag and although I was only carrying 35 lbs. it felt very agile and supported the load well. I love the fact it is 70L, as winter equipment tends to be slightly bulkier and not necessarily heavier. This bag seems optimal for the average 45 lbs. winter bag. The OutDry is an awesome aspect of the bag, not having to worry about anything inside getting wet or carrying a frozen soaked bag is nice. The material of the bag is durable and I look forward to having this bag for many seasons to come. I was very pleased with the functionality of the gear placement and its compression system, it is noticed a lot of thought went into the design. I have a few more trips planned this season so I will get more extensive use of the bag and update my review accordingly. Overall, so far I am very pleased and believe it is well worth its weight.
