Rainshadow™ 36 OutDry® Backpack is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great large day pack Large roomy interior bag. Love the waterproof. Has plenty of pockets to organize my gear. Light weight and fells good on my shoulders. Only things I don't like: 1) That if the top has a decent amount of weight, the pack won't sit upright when you flip it open. Not a big deal, I just lean it against a rock or something. 2) Quick access pockets on the belt are kind of small, had to cram my keys (total of 4 keys and a key fob on a medium carabiner) in to fit them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Uncomfortable sack I bought this daypack for a trip of 9 months. I use it as everyday bag and as my main daypack while hiking for about 4.5 months now. * The bag doesn't have more than a big main pocket, and other than it, it has only very small pockets that located badly only at the top of the bag, which make it impossible to handle if you put a bit of weight in them because the bag falls as you open it. The main pocket is huge and things can get lost until I'll completely empty it. * the bag is not waterproof, I hiked with it on light rain and after an hour and a half the bag was soaked with water in the main pocket, not mentioning the small pocket at the top. * The bag is not very comfortable at general, and once I have more than 3-4 kilos it become really bad because the back collapse. * the zippers of the bag are poorly built, and from the moment I bought the bag I have difficulties with opening and especially closing the bag, every single time. I love mountain hardwear, we buy a lot of products from the company and they are all great, that's why I let myself buy this bag without reading reviews about it first, which found out to be a big mistake. In addition, I know the OutDry technology from a different bag of my girlfriend and there it functions amazingly good. All of this made this purchase really disappointing for me as I expected a great product like all of the other products I have from mountain hardwear, or at least that it will be reasonably good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent pack I live on the east coast of Scotland, so keeping things dry is an issue. I have a roll-top pack that is excellent, but I find the roll-top a bit of a hassle with respect to access. Also, many other water resistant packs I have seen have no exterior pockets or compartments. I have done about 200 miles with this pack, with loads from 2-7kg, for distances ranging from 2-12 miles hillwalking and footpath commuting. I believe I have sufficient experience with the pack to give an informed review: The pack is outstanding, but not flawless. It is the most comfortable pack I have experienced with light loads (<3 kgs). With medium loads (5 kgs or so), it is still among the best I have worn. However for relatively heavy loads (about 7 kgs), the lack of a rigid back stay makes it mildly uncomfortable after about 2 miles of walking. I do not begrudge the pack this, for the pack is not designed for heavy loads. In this regard the hip belt stabilises the pack but does not transfer weight to the hips. In terms of everyday functionally it is liberating to avoid faffing about with a rain cover. The compartments and pockets are handy and well thought out. The pack has an excellent system of straps for adjusting it. Strengths: The main compartment is waterproof (provided the flap over the zip is turned down), as advertised, and so far I have experienced no leaks. It is amazingly comfortable with reasonable loads. Basically it allows me to walk without thinking about the pack, and thus it is my go-to pack. Things I would change: I would add a removable stay for better weight transfer for heavier loads. I'd suggest using waterproof zips instead on relying on the flap over the zip for the main compartment. I'd reconfigure the hydration pocket so it could double as a sleeve for a notebook computer. The straps for compressing the pack could have the option of feeding through the side water bottle pockets. The two interior pockets at the top of the pack can make access difficult if they are full, so perhaps their location or size should be reconsidered. Finally, I am 6'2", and the pack is just barely long enough for me. Offering the pack in different back lengths makes sense. If Mountain Hardware made these adjustments would I buy the new version even though I am overjoyed with the pack now? Yes. It's that good.
