Always warm, always cozy! I hiked the colder part of the PCT (everything but NoCal and Oregon) with this bag, and while it's not the lightest bag for a long-distance hike, my nights were always warm and cozy regardless of weather and altitude. To me, that is worth the extra weight. There are lighter bags with similar ratings out there, but they're often less roomy and to actually stay warm in those one has to shake the down into the right areas, make sure to sleep on top of the zipper and so on. Or, they simply don't deliver on the rating. I find the Phantom true to rating and very comfortable to sleep in. It kept me warm and cozy on nights were all my water froze solid (inside the tent, no less!) and it's not unusual to wake up cowboy-camping in the desert with the outside of the bag white from frost, yet feel not only warm, but thoroughly relaxed and cozy. I've slept some 120 nights in this bag so far, and after a down-wash it looks and feels like new. I suspect it'll live forever. I got it damp, if not wet, a couple of times, and while that makes it a little less comfortable to crawl into the bag, the Q-Down seems to work almost as well when damp. My only complaint would be that the stuff-sac provided with the bag is a little tight (and heavy). Stuffing the sleeping bag remains my least favorite part of packing up in the morning, but then again, I haven't bothered to look for another stuff-sac... January 6, 2015
Awesome Sleeping Bag I was hesitant to buy this bag due to the price tag, but am glad I did. As I like to say, a couple hundred bucks seems like a lot until you are up on the mountain freezing, wishing you had spent the extra cash. First of all, the compressability and weight are awesome. Packs down very small and easily fits in my sleeping bag compartment in my pack. My old one had to be forced into this compartment and was about a pound heavier. The comfort is probably the best thing I can say about the bag. Im not sure what MHW did, but he head portion of the bag is sooo comfortable. I also like that the pull cord is easily accessable and simple to use (unlike some bags that have 4 or 5 cords to adjust). I used this bag down to 20 degrees and stayed very warm....no issues at all. The next morning, a lot of moisture had accumulated on the outside of the bag. The water dried out quickly and it performed just as well the next night which was around 18 degrees. The draft collar also works well and is very comfortable on the neck area. Zipper works pretty well, had a couple of snags, but no big deal to get it loose. I love this bag and highly recommend it, even for the extra money. November 17, 2014
Warm and durable This bag has seen 100+ days in the field and is still very warm! I've slept warm in this bag below 15 degrees, which is rare considering most bags are rated at the temperature that they can keep you safe. The only problem I've had is the zipper will pop open if pushed, but that's expected after the use I've put on it. Also, it will trap some moisture occasionally, but it dries out quickly the next morning before packing it in. October 8, 2014
Solid bag in Snow Been using this bag for almost a year. It has seen 5 of the Cascade Volcanoes this season for mountaineering and ski touring trips. The Good: This thing is warm!!! Has kept me warm down well into the teens. It zips together very well with my girlfriend's phantasia 15. No cold spots to speak of. The Dry-Q Down handles any condensation with ease. Light enough for our ski touring and after at least 20 nights these bags still look like brand new. Super comfortable inside. For the durability, warmth, weight, and packability I don't think these can be beat for the price. The Bad: Nothing to speak of. If you really want to knit pick it the zipper gets stuck occasionally, but its less than 2 seconds to fix and EVERY sleeping bag has this issue. If you want a bomber bag that can handle just about every thing you can throw at it and still be able to afford to drive to the mountain then look no further. September 6, 2014
Great bag for the price! Have used the Phantom 15° since 2011. Winter, spring, summer and fall conditions in the Sierra. Bag is warm, fits comfortably and packs down small. I sleep on my side and still find this bag gives me sufficient room. Sub 15° on a winter ascent of Mt. Whitney's Mountaineer Route and the bag was perfect temp while wearing a base layer. I find this bag too warm during summer trips in the Sierra even when above 10,000ft - usually sleep with zipper fully down with one leg in and one leg out. As with every MHW sleeping bag the zipper gets annoying when you're not careful about zipping it up in the middle of the night. Small price to pay for a 2lbs 15° bag at the price point. Highly recommend this bag if you don't want to break the bank! The Taffeta lining on the inside I find more comfortable then the Pertex used in competitors bags. No cold spots experienced. Extremely high loft! July 24, 2014
Sweet Bag I have the previous version of this bag (sans Q-Shield) and have been very happy with it. I'm particularly pleased with it's cut. I'm 6' tall and ~170 lbs. I can comfortably layer up for winter alpine trips (belay jacket & insulated pants) and take this bag's range down to zero easily. I also don't find it overly big when just in my skivvies. I do agree with previous reviewers that the zipper gets stuck. I have learned to live with this as I've never owned a bag where this wasn't the case. Fix the zipper & this bag earns the full 5 stars. I'd pull the trigger on this bag again. Especially with the Q-shield down at no added weight. Nice work MH. November 10, 2013
Excelent bag with some tweaking I purchased my Phantom 15 about three years ago. (Red and Slate) I must say it is one of the most comfortable cold weather bags I have ever owned. That being said, there are two glitches for me: 1. The zipper sticks and it's annoying in the middle of the night. 2. The 15 degree rating is a bit generous. Wear your thermals and a good watch cap in any weather under 20 deg. I would recommend it to a friend but with the two cautions. Thanks October 21, 2013
Excellent bag This is an amazingly warm and comfortable sleeping bag. This is my first impression after one camping trip. With the night temperatures in low 40s to high 30s, I didn't need any base layer, and didn't even bother to zip this bag up. The material is very thin, and one should be careful while handling this bag. I hope it will last a long time. And one more thing to mention - apparently, I've got a previous version of the bag, one that is red "lava" in color. But the discount that I had made it a perfect purchase. May 6, 2013
