Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent rain jacket. The jacket does exactly what it is designed to do: it keeps you warm and dry when outside in the rain and with a base layer when you are outside when it's snowing The pit zips keep temperature modulation easy to maintain. Overall, I'm very pleased! May 1, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Everything you could want I am very excited about this jacket...it's very well made and it looks great. The function is terrific...the rain has no chance when I'm wearing this thing. April 4, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great basic shell After returning a couple of hard shells before, finally got a fit. Others were really big in a large, but short with tight pits/shoulders in a medium. I'm 6'1" 165#, using the large with this. It's a great rain jacket with a fleece under it. I'll use it more often for skiing, including with a light insulated jacket underneath when skiing below freezing. It's barely big enough to effectively stuff a big down jacket underneath e.g. for snow camping or below 10 F, though. I really like the two layers with lining construction. More comfortable than the plastic feeling 2.5 layer or the stiff 3 layer laminates. Nice big handwarmer pockets. Chest pocket is fine. Light weight. The amphibian color is bright, like grass green, rather than conifer green. February 12, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect for cold, rainy days Originally ordered the Plasmic Ion Jacket, but I replaced with this since it's dual layer and DryQ Elite. Glad I did, plus I much prefer the dark grey interior. Well worth the upgrade. Also downsized from XL to L. I'm 6'2", 200 lbs and it fits like a glove. January 3, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by great all purpose rain jacket I usually wear XL or XL tall but needed to size up to XXL to allow for layering and proper flexibility. Very lightweight. No interior pockets but that's not really a problem. While still attractive, this product was clearly designed for actual field use and is not just the fashion wear that some other formerly trusted outfits are producing. December 30, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Go to jacket. Perfect all around jacket. This jacket Breathes well and packs well. Another post stated its too warm above 80. I would agree with the exception that raining + 80 degrees = why even bother wearing a jacket. A weather proof jacket that is even capable of being comfortable close to those temps shows how breathable it is. I'm sure its more uncomfortable in the 90s after stops raining without the jacket, especially in the humid east. The quality of this jacket is top notch for its price point and the fit and feel is good as well. I am usually off trail hunting and this jacket has held up to the abuse. It also looks good for around town. For reference I am 5'10" 175lb and a medium is perfect. enough for a little layering. The pits, as another post stated can be tight with additional layering but not enough to bother me. Rated 5 out of 5 by Love it! Working in the Pacific Northwest I needed a good field/town rain jacket that could hold-up, the Ampato jacket is perfect! Love the material and fit. While I haven't yet used it for anything too strenuous, so far it's very well ventilated. The fleece lined pockets and pit zips are a great extra. The blaze color is a cross between orange and red...really cool. January 29, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not what I was expecting in my return So I do believe this is a good jacket for some, but not for me. I originally had one of MH's gore-tex pac-lite shells from before they merged with Columbia, and it was GREAT. I used it for backpacking everywhere and it stayed waterproof a long time (6 years) and that's monsoons in Florida and western NC. When it finally petered out, MH held by their word (which is awesome) and sent me the Ampato as a replacement. It is no longer gore-tex, and I've noticed water not beading off like it used to. It is also a larger fit than my old jacket so I sometimes feel lost in it. And it is now much bulkier than my previous jacket, making it harder to stow somewhere small. The added inner material is nice for cooler days, but I find I can no longer use this jacket in summer rainstorms above 80F, cause theres too many layers of material and not the same breathability. I'm sure this is a great jacket for some folks, but this is my experience and I'm sad to say it does not live up to the jacket I returned. I give it three stars based on my previous jacket being a five, and this just seems average coming from a company that I feel has very quality products. Good on MH for holding up on their return promise, but Im not terribly impressed with their new line, or maybe just this jacket. November 10, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great waterproof jacket for all but warmest seasons First of all, great outer fabric, not plastic-bag feeling and not crinkly like a lot of hardshells out there. Feature wise, it has everything you need and nothing you don't. No inner pockets but I don't hardly use them anyways. I like the addition of the waterproof zippers over the flap of the past designs. I feel like I could use this in nearly any type of activity, from travel, hiking or biking. The lining makes it comfortable if wearing with just a t-shirt and provide just enough "insulation" to wear in colder climes. My only complaint is it is tough to layer underneath because the armpits are so tight up in the pit. I know it's the Mountain Hardwear "fit" but loosen up on the pits a little, I don't understand why it has to be so tight. October 7, 2014
