BMG™ 105 OutDry Backpack 3.8 5 5 5
Tries to be too many things to too many people I'm torn over how to comment on this pack. I want to like it but find it hard to do so. It’s a large pack and Mountain Hardwear has tried to make it appealing to the enthusiast market as well as the novice pack buyer. The pack does hold tons of gear but when it comes to the details, it gets almost everything wrong. I'm an avid climber and treker and so my feedback is based on my experience across other competing packs and what I've found while using my BMG: Stuff is sown all over the place - The pack has a surprising number of gear loops, attachment points, straps, clips, whistle, loops, buckles etc. This totally defeats the approach of having a clean and self contained bag but impresses buyers who are new to backpacking who think that kind of stuff is nice. You can hang multiple cups, poles, axes, crampons, a camera, you can strap on sleeping pads and bags all over the outside. The opposite of what experienced hikers are looking for. My friends and I began to joke that I could maybe shave a couple pounds off the pack weight just by cutting off all the extra stuff that this bag has sown all over its exterior. Gear hanging loops on waist, shoulders, sides, top sides etc..... - enough said. Silly pockets in top section and crampon pouch area - the top section is effectively unusable when the pack is full because it is crushed down, and the extra zippered pouch inside the top pouch is redundant. Then adding 4 more gear attachment loops all over the already floppy top is useless. The crampon pouch area is an enigma. Why they have chosen to put a second zippered pouch underneath the already strapped down outer pouch such that you cannot use the zippered one when anything is in the strapped outer pouch is a mystery. Additionally, my crampons cut through and punctured the pouch on first use, and my crampons are not particularly sharp. Velcro on side pockets - I really dislike this feature. I actually cut mine off to lose the weight. Nothing fits in them when the pack is full anyway, the Velcro is impossible to open in the field, it prevented me from storing wands and pickets in the side pockets. Outdry - my friends began to joke that they should have called it 'Inwet'. Any moisture that gets into the bag via blowing snow or comes in on your gear just stays locked inside, additionally, after a day or so of gentle rain or snow, the pack would be soaked through and through, particularly prone to this is the underside of the top pouch. Shoulder and waist straps - woefully insufficient for anything over 70 lbs. Overall sloppiness - the bag is so large that unless you keep it pretty full, the myriad of straps and buckles is ineffective at compressing the bag down into something that doesn't just flap in the wind. Axe loop - the axe stowage system is annoying. Of all the dozens of extra superfluous stuff sown onto the outside of this pack, you couldn't give me a simple axe loop? Instead I have a heavy, complicated and messy tuck away system....Madness.... Fit is poor - as many people have commented on various gear reviews, the sizing is problematic. The s/m is too small for me and the m/l is too big. I do the best I can with my m/l but it’s not a very comfortable pack. My overall impression is that this pack is best used by somebody just out of college doing a hiking tour through Europe, going from hostel to hostel. The pack does collapse down well so that you can actually pack it inside of your check luggage. It does hold a ton of gear. However, the pack simply doesn't perform as a backcountry backpack as its way too sloppy with straps and accessories all over the exterior that flap in the wind or get caught on stuff, in addition to the point that the straps are insufficient to support an actual heavy load. Great backpack I haven't been hiking in awhile and purchased this bag, I thought It would hurt a little until I broke it in but it was very comfortable. February 26, 2015
good but expected more I got this pack to take up the West Buttress on Denali; basically the intended use of this pack. After the trip I feel like this was almost a good pack. Pro – The pack does a great job at changing size. With the top all the way down and the compression straps tight it the pack can carry a 50L load very well. Fully loaded the pack is just as good. The pack has all of the features a big mountaineering pack should. I particularly liked the small sled loops. The waterproof fabric is great and kept out snow and freezing rain. Con – I know that the pack is trying to be a very light weight pack, but its still a 100L pack and should carry very big loads comfortably, but the light weight padding on the hip belt and shoulder straps just isn’t enough. I would have rather had a pack a few ounces heavier that was more confortable with a big load and sled. The picket pockets on them are too small. When the pack is fully loaded it is hard to fit wands or pickets into them and as a result I ended up with small tears in the fabric. I would like to see a larger elastic pocket and it would be great if skis could fit behind the pocket like on other packs. I liked that the top flap was removable, but I wish they alternated male and female clips from front to back so that you could clip it around the hip belt for a light weight ski / summit pack. Great long lasting backpack I wanted a backpack that would be a longterm investment. After my first trip I can already see that I've got exactly that. Great quality, great color, great water resisting outside. I also liked the thought through different pockets the bag contains. I guess a zipper to access directly the biggest compartment would have been nice - but then I knew before purchase that it wouldn't come with this bag. Great backpack! April 16, 2014
Size Issues I'm 5'10'', 175 with a 34 waist. The M/L torso length is too long for me and the S/M waistbelt padding is to short for my hip bone. MH does not offer the new outdry waist belts as an optional item so I ended up getting a medium fitlock hipbelt. It has a similar pocket for the new aluminum stay and the padded portion is a bit longer. Too bad they didn't keep the three sizes like the old BMG but I liked the new improvements over the old BMG enough to try and make this new outdry pack work. March 15, 2014
