Men's Monkey Man™ Jacket 4.6 5 106 108
Can you love a jacket? Absolutely my favorite jacket/fleece I own. Extremely warm, especially with a lightweight, windproof shell. I listed fit as "just right", but keep in mind that the fit is made for layering, therefore a little more tight-fitting than your average outer layer. I'm 6'1" tall, 177 lbs. I usually wear a large, but opted for an XL in this jacket. The XL fits like what you would expect a large outershell to fit, except the sleeves are a little longer, which doesn't hinder due to the snug fit at the wrist. I wore this fleece camp-side with a MH Power Stretch Zip Tee and MH Typhoon Shell when temperature was 27 degrees and my core was nice and cozy. My wife tried to take it, so I bought her one so I could have mine back. Oh yeah, great makeshift pillow while camping. February 8, 2011
Only fleece I wear So I know it is essentially summer but I always wanted a fleece like this and I am very pleased with it. Excellent maneuvability and outdoor capability. I am always worried to ruin it so haven't gone out to the backcountry (yet) with it. It is a little small for my build but then again, I like that it is fitted and close to the chest/breast area. However, it does not look especially waterproof/resistant so I would layer it if I am wearing it. I love the blue/navy too, great color!! May 15, 2013
Love the Monkey! You can't go wrong with the monkey! I have 3 monkey jackets and my wife has 2. They are the best. The quality is great. I am 5'7", 155lbs and I wear a medium. You will not be disappointed. May 6, 2013
Not consistent fit I bought the X-Large, expecting it to fit just like my other X-Large Mountain Hardwear jacket. It ended up being way too big and unfortunately, I'm unable to return it for a smaller size. April 17, 2013
Monkey Man Two.. I have owned a Monkey Man for a period of time. We recently bought our twelve year old one. HE LOVES IT. Once again, Mountain Hardware continues to lead with quality and comfort, well done Mountain Hardware. March 4, 2013
Design that is intelligent and inspired. The jacket itself is a wonder. High quality materials. Higher quality construction. Design that is intelligent and inspired. If you use it right, it will take care of you.First, it is not a "me too" fleece. This fleece is made to be very breathable. It dries extremely fast and is perfect for layering. It isn't designed, nor will it stop much wind or any water. It does provide great wartmth under a shell and feels amazing. For nastier elements I pair it with my MHW Android. It is designed for mountain climbing, which I don't do so I can't talk to its effectiveness in that area. However, being cut that way, it has shorter torso for a harness and long arms. The pockets are well thought out and very usable.I have to buy one for my wife, she has stolen mine and I want it back. :) February 9, 2013
Warm and sturdy I wear Mountain Hard Wear for my work. I am a Metalsmith who works in a very cold studio. This is the second "Monkey Jacket" I have bought. They hold up under harsh working conditions. I never have to worry about going up in flames, I know a spark will only make a small hole. The features I like the most is the close fit of the wrist part of the sleeve and waist band. It keeps dirt and small scraps of metal out of my sleeves. Moving around easily with the feeling of lightness and warmth is great for my work. I am a woman, who needs the workmanship of the men's jacket instead of the light and less well made women's similar style jacket. January 20, 2013
Excellent fleece jacket Got this in the mail a few weeks ago and it fits great. The fleece is so lofty and fur-like that the jacket is currently holding it's own during January in New England. Throw some goretex over this jacket and you'd be set for anything. Also digging the "grill" color. It looks gray or green depending how the light hits it, very cool. January 14, 2013
Great buy! This is a superior jacket when it comes to men's fleece jackets. It is extremely comfortable, and fits very well under my Mtn HW Shell. The only thing I wish it had was some type of integration into the shell. For example, The North Face has the sleeve buttons and the zippers making their fleece/shell completely integrated; it's a nice feature. I'm not saying that it would sway me to purchase that product over Mtn HW, but it would be a great add-on. January 7, 2013
Great Jacket I ordered two of the jackets for my grandsons. They loved them and I was pleased with them. January 6, 2013
Furry Love Absolutley the best fleece I've ever known! It's insanely comfortable and super warm. Some may complain that the arms are too long, but I actually prefer it as I have rather long arms with a +3 ape index. I'm 6'1" ~180lbs and the large fits perfect December 23, 2012
Men's Monkey Man Jacket I purchased after already having a Monkey Man Pull-Over; and purchasing a Monkey Man-Women's Jacket for my wife. I absolutely recommend this item; it is functional; well-cut (better fit than others); the fleece is so soft and warm; and mostly the weight of the jacket is perfect for my daily use at this time of year.Thank you; a great product and well worth the price. The Single best piece of clothing I own... This is by far the best piece of clothing I have purchased through the years. I wear this all the time, the only piece of clothing I own that I know as soon as I throw it on I am warm. The only down fall is the wind cuts right through it. Ive heard not so good things about the new wind proof version so I would stick with this original version, I just throw a rain shell over top if its windy and it keeps me warm. December 7, 2012
Nice Jacket - watch size Good looking functional jacket. Beware sizing - my son is always a 'medium' in this type of jacket. However, this Mountain Hardwear jacket runs very small (despite the info on the size chart pointing to a medium) and I will need to exchange it for a large. November 18, 2012
We are all monkeys! First and foremost, everyone wants to caress you when you wear this jacket. I found myself constantly rubbing my own torso so I bought my wife one too and I just caress her torso. This is not the most technical jacket out there but hands down my favorite and always part of my outdoor arsenal. Warmth-for-weight, this jacket out performs many different technologies out there. It's hotter than a buttered bun fresh out of the oven. It's very light too. I used to love heavy 300 weight fleeces but the older I get, the less weight I want to lug around. The fabric smooshes down really compresses nicely too, so on insanely cold days, you can cram this underneath a few upper layers without much noticeable bulk difference.Based on other reviewers, don’t wash and dry the jacket unnecessarily or you’ll lose some of the beneficial characteristics. I'd hand wash and air dry if necessary. This is my go-to jacket for everything and it mates perfectly with other brand shells. I modified mine and added pit zips and a thumbhole in the sleeves. This is now as close to perfect as possible. The only criticism I can make is that the neck will not stay up on its own unless the zipper is all the way up.BTW. I haveLet your inner monkey out. Get one. November 16, 2012
Monkey Man Fleece I thought the fleece was pretty good quality, but it does fit a size smaller than the rest of my clothing. The arm length was about true fit, but it was too short. I would definitely recommend it, but it would be helpful to try one on before you make a decision. November 16, 2012
THE jacket to have I have been the proud owner of this model of jacket for about 5 years. In that time, I have owned 3 a black xxl, a blue 3xl and the most recent a red and black 3xl. I actually still use and wear the black one (under the new one) on very cold days (-10 or lower) with wind. I have never owned another jacket that has lasted so long OR worked so well. The zippers are usually the weakest point on a jacket, followed closely by the seams. The 5 year old jacket is still working like new at BOTH.The only thing I would advise...do not use a dryer to dry them, and comb them after washing (the dryer will mess up the long nap and make the fleece feel like a poodle). As for the blue one.....well, the ex-wife took that one when she left...always knew she had good taste. October 25, 2012
AWESOME Awesome product, comfortable and warm yet light-weight. I only wish is was made in a full body suit. October 17, 2012
Sooooo nice I was debating over the Monkey Man or the Tech Jacket... Well, I haven't seen the Tech Jacket, but the Monkey Man is easily the most comfortable jacket I've ever owned, and haven't second guessed my decision once. So comfortable, you won't want to take it off. Seriously. Fully zipped with a base layer, its warm enough for most conditions. Not sure about its wind-proof-ness, though. Combined with the Ampato jacket, this thing will cover your bases in all but the worst conditions.I ordered the Grill colorway, and it is quite a bit darker than what it looks like on the website, but still like it. Highly recommended. October 2, 2012
The Last Fleece You'll Need Hand's down the best jacket I've ever owned. From the states to a winter at a remote site in Afghanistan it did exactly what I needed it to: keep me warm and not get in the way. September 14, 2012
Well...I'm bias towards soft jackets, but.. This jacket is truly very nice. I read myriad reviews before I got it because I couldn't find it in stores anywhere (What? They don't sell this jacket during the summer? <--This is sarcasm, btw). Most reviews talked about how it runs a little big and you should size up. I have no advice on that. All I can say is that I am 5'10, 140 and medium fits me really well.Of course, your sizing requirements are different from mine (even if you are also 5'10 140, you might want a looser/tighter fit than I do), but the medium is snug on me. The torso is a good length. The arms are indeed a bit long but not absurdly long. It is a performance jacket, I would rather the arms be long than short. Having said that, it seems necessary for me to mention that I am really not an outdoorsy kind of guy. I just like the jacket. So, I cannot comment on the performance of the Monkey Man when it comes to hiking/skiing/hunting/whatever...I just know it is warm as anything. The color is close to the color on my monitor...I got the cordovan/black color. The thing sure is warm! Take my review with a grain of salt, please. It is early September in Colorado and still pretty warm. I have not been able to try the Monkey Man in the cold yet; however, it is clear to me from my test trials that functionality is not a flaw of this jacket...this thing is made to keep you warm, and it will!If you've been considering whether or not to get this jacket, I recommend just getting it. I'm not disappointed at all. I did have buyer's remorse after I placed the order while the jacket was on its way, talkin' about "I just spent $173 on a JACKET??"Needless to say, this remorse subsided the first time I tried the jacket on.All in all, my advice is to get the jacket. If you don't like it, I am certain customer service can help you out. Can't wait for all the compliments I will receive on it this winter!! September 4, 2012
Great layer. This jacket is almost too warm unless its really cold out. I wore it on a chilly morning in Yellowstone country and i had to unzip it. Will make a amazing layer for snowmobile guiding this winter.. July 19, 2012
MONKEY MAHEM Im in Valdez AK. This Monkey Man jacket is perfect for my mid layer. No regrets, lots of envy from others.Only issue is length for me.I am 6'2" the sternum just runs short. Doesnt quite go to my waist, but would rather keep it and not return it rather than to go without. Thanks for making such a comfy jacket.L. MartinValdez July 7, 2012
What everyone else says.. This is a great jacket, and its ideal purpose would be a midlayer during the winter. Because it lacks wind protection, you can get cold when the weather gets down to the 40's. I have two things MH could do to improve this model. 1) Shorten up the sleeves, no need for them to be so long and baggy (and I have pretty long arms too). 2) Simplify the cuffs, just make them circular, I'm not a fan of the triangle shape of them (its hard to tell from the pictures what I'm talking about) It's not that big of a deal, but when the sleeves are as long as they are, it just looks wierd)So it is really a great warm fleece, I would just change those two minor things if this jacket were to get a grade of A+ April 28, 2012
Extra Warm I recently bought this jacket as a nice warm fleece layer to wear under my shell for skiing. Let's just say, if the tempuratures are not in the single digets or lower, you will be sweating your butt off with a good shell. I have a Marmot Goretex shell and the MonkeyMan jacket actually zips into it almost perfectly. I could complain that this jacket is too warm, but that would be like complaining if my icecream was too cold. The only couple downsides: The sleeves were almost 3 inches too long and I like to believe I have long arms (I can understand why they called it the MonkeyMan). It wouldn't have been a problem if there were handy thumbholes, but this jacket lacks them as well. This jacket doesn't serve well as a standalone jacket when it is windy. If the wind is calm, it works great for anything above 15 degrees but below 50. The body of the jacket also ran a little large as well. I'm 6'0" and 220 (most of my weight is in my legs) and went with the Large size and it fit great besides being a little long in the arms. February 29, 2012
Great jacket/very versatile I really like this jacket alone or used as a base layer. Very nice looking alone and as a base layer, provides great insulation under another jacket or shell. I like the pocket/storage as well. February 19, 2012
Great coat for cold mornings in Germany!! I am 6' 3" @ 215 lbs. and the XL fits just right. The arm length is a little longer than a normal jacket but this allows you full range of motion without restriction. It is a great coat with plenty of warmth. I bought it to battle the cold winter mornings here in Germany. It will keep you warm in the 20 degree weather and works great as a liner under a warm shell. February 12, 2012
Awesome Coat I'm 5 ft. 8 in 155lb and the medium fits perfectly. The arms are long to improve the range of motion so your can reach over your head without exposing your arms to the cold. I'm perfectly comfortable wearing this jacket in 30-50 degree weather, and it makes a great liner for when the temps drop any lower. February 6, 2012
It's so fluffy! This jacket is very comfortable. Have had it a month and it makes a great casual jacket to wear in the light winters we have here in TN, and looks great. Very warm if there isnt a high breeze, cause it is very breathable, but that is also a good thing if you are active will wearing it cause it keeps you from getting to hot. makes a great mid layer for very cold nights. The only compliant i really have about the jacket is its durablity, while its held up fine so far, this jacket seems to shed profusely, I especially notice if I wear light colored pants like Khakis. I just wonder how long before the jacket is completely fleeceless at this rate. January 30, 2012
WARM, WARM, WARM! I am amazed at how warm this jacket is. It not only looks great, but will handle cold temps and even a strong wind. Definitely good under a shell during winter camping. It looks almost too good to get it dirty though.Another awesome piece of clothing from Mtn Hardwear. January 25, 2012
It's awesome I've worn the monkey man jacket now for awhile and it's fantastic. Incredibly warm, very light weight, and comfortable. The material is super soft! I will admit, the arms are freakishly long but still a good length with some weird cuff thing going on (I think to keep from getting your cuffs dunked in everything though).Overall I am very pleased January 17, 2012
Moves like Jagger in the Monkey Man Monkey Man. Always reminds me of the Rolling Stones classic. There's not much I can say about how great this jacket that hasn't been said. There does seem to be some confusion over the size, and maybe I can offer something in that department. Despite some comments to the contrary, I find the Monkey Man fits true to size. You must keep in mind that no matter how you intend to use it, the jacket is sized like a performance mid-layer. The best insulator is going to be close to the heat source. In this case: you! Don't worry, it's got plenty of give and stretch and will keep up with you in any vigorous activity. If you plan to wear it over something much bulkier than a base layer, or you like the looser fit of an around town jacket, then you may want to size up. I also find the arm length to true to the size chart. Maybe it's worth keeping in mind that the arm length is given from where the seam will be on a snug fitting jacket. If that seem is over the shoulder a bit, which some people prefer and would go hand in hand with a looser fit, then you might have some extra sleeve (free of charge!) to work with. January 12, 2012
wonderful Customer service was wonderful. The representive I spoke to was very helpful. He helped me determine the right size and assured me that it would arrive in time for Christmas.Which it did. My entire experience was wonderful , and I will definetely keep ordering from this company. January 11, 2012
Awesome Monkey Man Jacket This is an excellent product! I live on the central coast of Oregon and so far this jacket has been a pleasure to wear. I am 155lbs and 5'10" and I probably could have worn a medium, the arms are really long. The rest of the jackets quality and function have been superb and I think I would rather have it a bit big in size than small. January 7, 2012
extremely comfortable, technical fleece This is an extremely soft and comfortable fleece, with a few little details that are very nice (the stretch material around the wrists and waist for example). what I enjoy most about it, though, is the fit. The jacket is cut athletically, relatively close to the body. I've struggled in the past to find a comfortable fleece that didn't have a boxy, overly large cut. I'm not an extraordinarily skinny man either (5' 7," 160 lb, I wear a medium in most everything). the sleeves are very slightly longer than my arms, but this is intended in the design of the jacket, so the wearer can reach overhead without pulling the hem up and exposing part of his torso to the cold. I personally love this feature. I find it gives me more freedom of movement, and the elastic in the wrists keeps the sleeves from interfering with my hands. January 6, 2012
I LOVE THIS JACKET BUT COULD USE SOME IMPROVEMENTS I absolutely love this fleece. I found the body to be a little short and was disappointed because there was no cording that runs through the hem to tighten it down. I would like to see some investment in a form of wind barrier within the jacket. All things considered I would still buy this jacket again. December 29, 2011
Men's Monkey Man Jacket Excellent transaction. Easy online ordering and prompt delivery. Product was a perfect fit and of goodquality. My Grandson was very pleased. Thanks and Happy New Year to all. December 28, 2011
Monkey Man Jackets keep you Warm! Great jacket especially when it's cold outside. I love everything about it except it might be a little bit too small. I know that monkey jackets aren't supposed to be big and baggy, but overall i really enjoy wearing this jacket December 27, 2011
The essential cold weather layer. This fleece is awesome and so darn comfortable! Im a Medium fit, which runs a little short about the waist, but the sleeves are plenty long. As a layer under a shell, it's amazing! I wouldnt recommend strenuous activity with this ape-drape on, as you'll be sweating in no time, but once the trekking is done or in milder activities it's perfect. If the Iceman would have had this pelt, there would still be Mastodons roaming the Earth today, but thankfully, we have the band instead. December 26, 2011
Monkey man Nice and warm athletic fit, polartec, product, great for layering December 25, 2011
Monkey man jacket made for obese people I've owned a monkey man jacket before and loved it. I ordered a new one for myself this year and just got it in the mail. The jacket is Baggy!! The arms could fit a full time bodybuilders and the chest and waist are made for a morbidly obese man. I'm a a large guy and don't have skinny arms by any stretch of the imagination, but the construction of this jacket makes it seem more fit to be sold in wal-mart than it does in an outdoor store catering to active people. The fit of the jacker makes it extremely inefficient at retaining body heat. I will be returning it. December 22, 2011
Fits well with long "monkey" arms This jacket is warmer than other fleeces I've had because of its furry pile. The chest is form-fitting but not tight, and the waist sits higher than I expected, so a shirt that lands below the belt will stick out of the jacket's waist. The sleeves fit normally regarding tightness, but they are 2 or 3 inches longer than I expected, so they bunch up. Bunched up sleeves look a little different, but are warmer than tight sleeves. The cuffs have a diagonally cut line between the plush fleece and the black cuff on the inner wrist/forearm that looks odd, but makes it easier to wear gloves or reach into your pockets. The collar is floppier than I expected, so if you want it to stay around your neck, you'll need to zip it all the way up like the manufacturer's picture. The entire jacket is soft and comfy. I'm 6 feet 180 lbs and the medium fits well. Thunderbird red matches the site's pic. December 21, 2011
My Monkey Arms Say Thank You Excellent look, feel and fit. I'm 6' 3" 175lb and the large is a perfect fit. The jacket is made to fit snug, so if you plan on wearing something underneath and need more room, go up a size. The medium was pretty snug on me, thus I opted for the large. I really like the extra arm length in this jacket...perfect for my "monkey" arms! December 19, 2011
Monkey Man jacket I have a feeling that if the Monkey Man jacket was available to infants , there would be far fewer security blankets being carried about. My girlfriend made fun of me for ordering a jacket with a funny name, needless to say after feeling it she wants one. December 15, 2011
warm very warm...looking forward to trying it in the snow. December 12, 2011
This jacket is amazing! Firstly, i would like to say that I hope Mountain Hardware keeps making the sleeves "ridiculously long" for those us who get the concept of dead air space creating insulation and retaining warmth. When the sleeves are pulled up around your wrists, they bunch up creating layers of fabric that make the jacket incredibly warm (and comfy,in my opinion) in the arms, especially when used as a layer under a hard shell jacket. It's not quite windproof, as would be expected, however, so a shell is a great companion for this jacket. I was skiing with just this and an outer shell in 20F weather and had to unzip my jacket after every run to cool off! After 4 years of use the very bottom of the jacket is slightly matted down from sitting on it, but this is entirely negligible and hardly noticeable. The jacket has no wear otherwise and I think it will last for a very long time. December 12, 2011
Monkey Man Jacket What an excellent jacket! The sleeves are slightly long, hence the name "monkey man" but it fits true to size and you could compare it to wearing around a fashionable snuggie! December 8, 2011
green monkey man jacket. Very quick.response. Received in 3 days. I'm 5'10" around 175and the jacket is snug, and just fitsat the shoulders and length. Looks great and the stitching and quality is very good. The colors areaccurate. Perfect for mid to late fall. I bought this to be a liner for a waterproof shell. Lookingforward to taking it out for more adventures. December 2, 2011
great jacket this jacket has everything! its very casual and good looking but at the same time if its freezing outside this jacket is perfect! I couldnt find anything else like it! November 30, 2011
monkey man requires monkey arms it's funny; I'm a huge Hardware fan, probably own 20 hardware coats, fleeces, or shells. Proabably 5 of them are cut for people with NBA type wingspans. Now I have pretty long arms, I'm 6'2" and have a 6'3" wingspan, but the monkey man jacket is litterally 4" too long in the sleeves, I'm not sure if there is a practical application for having ape-like arms, but for me it just makes the sleeves really cumbersome. I thought I'd use this as a base layer while skiing, but the sleeves were so long, I couldn't seal my shell and gloves, so I ended up not using it at all. November 28, 2011
