These pants are excellent. I originally bought them because of the zip cuff at the bottom of the legs. I was recovering from an injury and needed to find some pants that would fit over a walking cast. I have owned a few other brands of convertible pants (Cabelas, Columbia, REI and North Face) and these are by far my favorites. I have owned them for several months now and used them in the Rockies and the Alps. I love them. They are amazingly versatile. You can put a base or mid layer under them for cold weather, or convert them to shorts when it is warmer. They are also light and thin enough to wear under some over-pants if it gets really rough, or are transitioning to a snow sport. When they get wet, they dry very fast. I like the front pockets. They are positioned so that stuff doesn't fall out of your pockets when you sit down (unlike my REI or North Face). My only complaint it that if you don't wash them exactly according to the directions, they shrink just a tiny bit (in the length). The two recommendations I have to Mountain Hardware are these;1. make the belt a little wider to avoid belt twisting and the pants rolling over a bit at the top of the waist. 2. Consider zippers on the back pockets instead of Velcro, which can be uncomfortable on cold hands. Thanks MH, I will be buying more in the future!!

I am a professional guide and lead trips that are often a month in length. Generally I wear shorts, but this past season I spent several months in Northern Canada and wanted something that had a full leg and some substance to it. These pants are perfect for that. The shorts are not short, they come just above the knee, which I like. The material is a little thicker than some nylonish pants and was perfect for the conditions I was in. I do get hot easy so for mid summer in the lower 48, I probably wouldn't wear these.
The pants are durable. I wore them scrambling with a 70lb+ pack over class 4 terrain high in the mountains, every day for almost two months and they are still like brand new...except for the funky smell. I really wish MH could fix that for me.
The only gripe I have is with the belt. Some reviewers stated it dug in. I didn't find that at all. What I did find was that it got twisted with no way to turn it without taking it completely out. I didn't do this in the field opting to try it at home. I am sure it will turn out fine, and to alleviate the twisting I will be sewing tha back of the belt into the pant itself. Hopefully that will make a difference.
For those people giving these pants a low rating because it doesn't have belt loops and has an internal belt, all I can say is, don't buy pants that have those features if you won't want them. That is totally your fault, not the pants. I hope your judgement in the backcountry is better than when shopping or there could be some lost hikers. ;)
Overall I really like these pants.
Recommended Uses:
Backpacking in cooler climates (below 60 degrees for me).
Drinking beer around a campfire.
Smelling up the tent after a few weeks in the backcountry.

Please bring back the old style.

When I burned a hole in a pair of my Mesa Convertibles, I ordered two more pairs to replace it. Unfortunately I got the new style. The sizing was a bit large, which was a disappointment as I was getting these through mail order. The material was different, more heavyweight, and there's a liner that resembles dryer lint. Most irritating however was the lack of cargo pockets. With the old style, I have carried gloves, sun hats and beanie hats, handkerchiefs, sandwiches smuggled from the chow tent, etc. With the new style, I can carry a cellphone. Literally anything bigger digs into my thigh. And why only one? These have gone from useful pants to someone's idea of a stylish pant. Not mine however, the fit on the old style was perfect and far more flattering than the new style. So I'm back to wearing the pants with the burn hole. Please bring back the old style, thank you.

Great pants, unsure about the changes.

I haven owned 2 pairs of these pants for awhile now and recently purchased 2 more pairs because I love my old ones so much. I didn't really look at the pictures when I ordered the new ones because I figured they would be the same. However, the new pants do not have cargo pockets like my old ones do, which I was disappointed about. The ankles on the new pants are different as well; they zip up to the top of the calf and half a snap ankle, whereas the old ones had cinch cord at the ankle and no zipper. Also, the newer models seem to run a little bit bigger than my old ones do. A medium / regular fits me great in my old pants (5'11" / 165) but the new version run a little big in the waist. I'm hesitant to get a smaller size though and have them end being too small. Overall though, I still love these pants!

Ok pants weird pockets

Good pants, shed water well, fit well. That said the pockets int he front looked weird. Although pockets in the front are very comfortable for you hands. These pants, when they become shorts are too long to bend you knees well to scramble over big rocks.

I wore these pants for 6 days straight in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with no issues. They stood up to numerous portages through thick mud and brush. The construction stands up well to abuse and should last for a long time. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Three fatal flaws

I had high expectations for these pants. They are well sewn with nice touches like an absorbent waistbelt. However, they have three fatal flaws that completely negate the benefits: an extremely narrow "built in" belt that a) tends to dig into your flesh when tight, especially when the pants start to sag b) Once the belt is inside the sleeve there is no way to get access to it, e.g., if it gets twisted. God forbid you take it out in an attempt to fix it, it takes two PhDs to figure out how to put it back. c) No belt loops for those of us that despise the provided belt. Yep, no external belt of any kind, either MH or others. I am so sorry that I bought TWO of these and wore them both before I figure out all this. Now I am stuck with two useless pairs of hiking pants. Save your money and buy something else.

Met High Expectations

These convertible pants met and even exceeded my expectations which for Mountain Hardwear products is always very high. Typical smart construction and high-end material. My favorite feature is that once the legs are removed the shorts are really fantastic as shorts - the zipper apparatus tucks away and you soon forget there were legs attached.
I'll be getting another pair soonish.

Just returned from an 11 day fully loaded bicycle tour of Norther New Mexico. These pants are light, roomy and comfortable. It was warm in the high country, so the zip off pant legs were a must. I liked the included adjustable belt. I'm 6'2", 230 lbs and found these pants roomy for an xl, not tight at all. They felt great after a day of climbing New Mexico mountains. The pockets weren't the cargo style pockets I'm used to, but they were adequate for my use.

Great pants!

I was dying to find some convertible pants to wear for backpacking. These are exactly what I wanted. They are light, warm, have a low-profile belt so as not to conflict with my backpack, and have sweat-guard fabric on the backside for those warm days. They do generate some static, but besides that they are perfect!

Great materials

I love the material and design. Three suggested design improvements: 1) wider, thicker belt (it gets twisted in the wash), 2) belt loops instead of channel (same twisting problem), 3) color coded zippers for right and left pant legs.

Great Trekking Pants

Purchased these pants for trekking in the Peruvian Andes. They were lightweight, water resistant, comfortable, and all around well balanced. The zip off legs made the pants easily converted to shorts.
Pros: lightweight, comfortable, waistline lined with soft material for comfort, fast drying
Cons: leg cargo pant is very small, would benefit from more cargo pant space, waist belt is a bit flimsy and can turn on itself

SUPER COMFORTABLE

I'm a 34 waist but have bigger than normal legs. These fit great with a lot of freedom of movement through the hip area.

Mt. Jefferson - White Mountains, NH
These pants are awesome for hiking, climbing or just wearing around town. It took me a little while to get used to only having one belt-loop for my keys, and the sizing is a little different in the crotch and back, but that's not a huge deal. The pants are very water resistant! After climbing Mt. Jefferson (White Mountains, NH), my friend and I butt-glissaded down some pretty lengthy snow fields, and the pants didn't soak through at all. They are also very wind resistant, which helps above tree-line. One feature that I really love is that the side-zip on the bottoms goes almost all the way up to the knee which makes taking them off over big boots SO much easier than with most pants! I highly recommend buying these pants!

Only convertibles I'll ever wear

Super comfortable. Lightly water resistant. Great in the wind. Only convertibles that don't look like daisy dukes for a guy. I have an older pair that had really weak velcro, but I just bought a second pair (about 2 years apart) and they seem to have improved the velcro a bit. I still wear the old pants. I just wanted a second pair so I didn't always have to wear the same thing...

Odd fit

I am a 6'5" 250 firefighter who is muscular but not a stick figure. I ordered a XL (long) which was perfect in length, leg, and waist thickness but the crotch/ upper thigh room has something to be desired. Just a VERY ODD fit through that area that makes them very uncomphy to squat or make big strides. To me these were made to fit a person with a big waist and tiny hip. I just don't get it. I am affraid to return them for an XXL because then the waist area/thighs would be huge. Mountain Hardware - Please re-evaluate your cuts. Levi's fit great which should represent the masses. Make your cuts like them or even Columbia clothing. As for the product itself, nice fabric, great short length. Would be more excited to use them on the trail if the thigh/hip area was better proportioned.
